Eliminating header pages on a network printer
Q:
Whenever I print a document to the network printer, I first get a sheet
of paper that has my name on it in big blocky letters. How do
I keep the system from wasting paper like this?
A: When printing to a network
printer, the default is to print a banner page with your login name
on it to identify the printout in a large office environment, but in
our situation, it is a waste of paper. The banner page is associated
with printer definitions on each computer - not with each user - so
it may be necessary to do the following on more than one computer if
you are a 'roving' user. To turn off the banner page:
- Navigate these menus: Start|Settings|Printers
- Select the appropriate printer and click the
RIGHT mouse button
- At the bottom of the list that appears, select
Properties
- Click on the 'Capture Settings' Tab
- In the lower third of the window that appears,
uncheck all of the boxes in the 'Job' section
- Click OK
Printing Postscript files
Q: I have
some files created from Unix that are postscript with a PS extension.
How can I print them in Windows95 on the network?
A: I have not found a simple
way yet. Postscript files must
be printed on a Postscript printer which
generally means any HP 4M laser printer or newer.
- Use FTP to move the file from the UNIX host
to the network if necessary
- Click Start, then Run, then type pconsole
and press enter. This will launch the network printing utility.
- Use the arrow key to move down to Print
Queue Information (the mouse does not
work in pconsole)
- From the list presented, select the postscript
printer that you wish to use
- Select Current
Print Job Entries
- Press the [Insert] key
- Type in the path and directory where your file is located and press
enter
- Select the postscript file you wish to print
- From the Print Job Configuration window that appears, select PS4_Job
- Press the [Esc] key
- In response to the 'save changes' dialog box, choose yes
Your file should now appear in the print queue and will be processed
and printed on the printer you selected.
