Computing Support: Email Spam

If you are getting a lot of spam, check google for your email address and ask the webmaster from the associated site to remove your address or hide it in a format that spambots can not harvest.

Using Spamassasin

If you are using the department email system and are getting a great deal of spam, this will help somewhat. It is not 100% effective, but it will make a big dent in the amount of spam that gets into your inbox.

Mail that looks like spam is tagged at OSU's email gateway by spamassasin before it is deposited into your inbox. You can use the spamassasin tag (hidden in the address header of the email) and the Outlook rules Wizard to automatically move spam to a different folder so you can review and delete it. (You should review it occasionally, sometimes legitimate email can trigger spamassasin. This is the reason it is not deleted at the mail gateway)

Here are the instructions for configuring the Outlook Rules Wizard to filter messages tagged as spam.
