We began investigations on ectomycorrhizal mat communities and activities in fall 2001. At this time we did an 15N isotope dilution experiment to determine gross rates of NH4+ production and consumption and of NO3- production and consumption. This experiment was repeated in June 2002. We also evaluated the potential of ectomycorrhizal mats to supply seedlings with N directly from amino acids using doubly-labeled (13C and 15N) amino acids. Samples from this experiment are awaiting analysis.
