Amendments to the
ALS Safety Guidelines
The following amended guidelines concerning ALS 0024 are considered approved as of the
February 5, 2001 Soils Faculty Meeting:
- Space on shelves and in cages will be assigned by the soils associate department head on
an as-needed basis. Space allocations will be reviewed as necessary; no space allocation
is "forever".
- Chemicals will not be stored in ALS 0024; chemicals will be kept in individual
laboratories.
- Each research group may keep an up-dated inventory of items in ALS 0024 but a global
inventory of all items in storage is deemed impractical. Each research group should be
prepared to present an updated storage inventory at the request of the fire marshal,
department head, soils associate head or the safety committee.
- Items should be labeled accurately. Cardboard boxes may be used to store items but if
the markings on the box do not reflect the contents, an accurate label should be added.
- Aisles between storage shelves should be kept clear. The storage room has no emergency
lighting and items in aisles are hazardous. If items (garbage cans, chairs) do not fit on
shelves, they should be placed at the closed end of an aisle against the wall.
- Light-weight items such as empty boxes may be placed on the top shelf but all other
items should be placed on lower shelves.
- The safety committee suggests an annual review by individual research groups of items in
storage. The committee further recommends department-wide cleanup during winter break
every three years.
In addition: Items stored in all common areas will identified by name and
telephone number of the responsible party and if those items are in containers, the
contents will be labeled accurately.
Recommended by Safety Committee members Joan Sandeno, Nan Richie, Will Austin and by
Soils Associate Department Head Dave Myrold
