Library reserve books, reference librarian use, etc.

As the Library's liaison to you and your department, I am sending some reminders and information about library services and resources. I hope you will share this information with your students as appropriate.

As you plan for this term's classes, now is a good time to put reading material on Reserve in the library, if needed. You can put library books or your own books and other materials on Reserve for students to use. Reserves can be for either two hours or two days. The Reserve Request Form is available on the web at http://osulibrary.orst.edu/reserves/rbrfrm.html or at the Circulation Desk.

I am available to give instruction on using library research tools, library tours, or to consult on library assignments. Please contact me at 7-0565 or may.chau@orst.edu to schedule a session in the Library or in your classroom. The library's computer classroom provides students with an opportunity for hands-on practice using databases to identify journal articles and other types of publications as well as access to the internet. It is very heavily used so I would need to know very soon if you would like me to do a library session there for your students. If your students need a review of basic library research principles, a self-paced Library Research tutorial is available at http://osulibrary.orst.edu/instruction/tutorials/.

I would appreciate it if you would tell students in your classes my name, that I am their subject specialist, and that I am available to give assistance by appointment on by e-mail. Please consider putting on your course pages my e-mail address (may.chau@orst.edu)  or the link to "How Reference Librarians Can Help You" at http://osulibrary.orst.edu/reference/refhelp.htm.

If you are planning to give a library assignment, it is very helpful for the library to have a copy of the assignment ahead of time. If you send me a copy in advance, I can check to see that the materials are available and inform the Reference Desk staff.

During the summer the library launched a new system (ILLiad) for managing interlibrary loan requests. To use this system, you must first set up an ONID account (http://onid.orst.edu/) if you do not have one. Information about Interlibrary Loan and registering for ILLiad is available at http://osulibrary.orst.edu/ill/

The library provides a journal alerting service called ingenta. For information about ingenta, look at http://osulibrary.orst.edu/research/databases/ingenta.htm If you have questions about using ingenta, please let me know.

Look at the Library's What's New Page, http://osulibrary.orst.edu/new/whatsnew.htm, to stay current with any changes at the library, for example, to see what new electronic resources we are reviewing.

I welcome your recommendations for book and journal purchases. You can let me know about your requests by phone, e-mail or campus mail.

Please contact me when you have questions or comments about library resources and services. I look forward to hearing from you.
