Barley and Cereal Programs at OSU

A comprehensive list of research and extension programs administered through OSU.

Applied Cereal Genomics. Established to complement existing genetics and breeding activities. Our research efforts focus on understanding the genetic basis of traits of agronomic relevance and the application of genomics for the improvement of wheat and other cereals. One broad area of interest includes quantitative trait mapping to genetically dissect agronomically important traits and to identify DNA-based markers that may be used for indirect selection of these traits. Other areas of interest include the genetic analysis of major genes involved in the domestication of wheat; the development of plant radiation hybrid mapping panels to facilitate the development of chromosome-based physical maps of cereals; and the study gene flow between wheat and its weedy relative jointed goatgrass. 

BarleyWorld.This site is an evolving gateway to resources on a most amazing plant – barley – provided by the Oregon State University Barley Project.

Cereals Extension. The Oregon State University Extension Cereals page provides information on cereal production, research, markets, and current events. There is also a directory to help locate people working with cereals at Oregon State University.

Dryland Cropping System. Umatilla County Extension provides information on wheat production, rotational crops related to wheat production and financial management on cereal farming operations. Thier purpose is growing wheat profitably, while increasing protection of soil and water resources. They provide the latest information to farmers and the public on farming and the environment.

Oregon Grain and Seed Crops Multimedia Resource. This web page contains seed pictures of crops commonly grown in the state of Oregon. It’s main purpose is to aid users in learning the distinguishing features of these crop seeds for identification contests held in various youth and young adult programs (4H, Future Farmer of America, etc.), but it also is a general guide to Orgeon field crops.

Wheat Breeding, Genetics & Quality Program.  The history of wheat is the history of our civilization.  Prior to the domestication of wheat and other cereal grains some 10,000 years ago, people were hunters and food gatherers living a nomadic existence.  When it was discovered that certain plants produced edible seed that could be replanted to achieve a more stable food supply, a civilization and a culture emerged.  With fewer people required to provide food, others were free to devote their energies to developing the arts and sciences.
