1998 state-wide variety testing program spring grains at North Willamette Valley (Scio).

notes: All seed was treated with Vitavax (fungicide) and Gaucho (insecticide) except where noted.

1000 kernel weight measured on one rep only.

The North Willamette Valley site is on a red hill soil. Wheat yields in our trials have been consistently low on these soils over the years. In an attempt to determine the cause of the low yields, phosphorus (P) and sulfur (S) treatments were added to Penawawa plots. There was a significant response to phosphorus, but not to sulfur. The Bray P1 soil test for phosphorus was 44 ppm, which is considered high. The response to phosphorus was therefore unexpected. We will investigate the P response further in 1999.
