Stephens wheat holds top spot for 1997

Stephens soft white winter wheat remains the leading variety
planted in Oregon, capturing 54.4 percent of the total acreage,
compared with 55.4 percent in 1996, according to Homer
Rowley of the Oregon Agricultural Statistics Service. Stephens
has held this top spot since 1979, with the percent of the
acreage planted to Stephens varying from 33.0 percent in
1979, up to 77.4 percent in 1991. For the sixth consecutive
year, Madsen, also a soft white winter wheat, was the second
most common variety with 10.9 percent of the total.
Penawawa, a soft white spring wheat, was the third most
common variety with 8.7 percent of the total acreage. This is
up from 7.8 percent in 96, and 7.4 percent in 95.
Soft white winter mixtures ranks fourth, with 6.4 percent,
followed by Rohde, a club wheat. Gene (6th), Rod
(7th),MacVicar (8th), Malcolm (9th), and Yecora Rojo (10th)
close out the top ten varieties in the State.
All white wheat varieties (club, spring and winter) make up
97.2 percent of Oregon's 1997 all wheat plantings, down from
98.1 percent in 1996. Club varieties decreased to 46,600
acres (4.7 percent of the total). Red wheat accounted for 2.8
percent of all wheat in 1997, up from 1.7 percent the previous year.

The Oregon Agricultural Statistics Service conducted the 1997
Wheat Variety Survey with funding by the Oregon Wheat
Commission. The cooperation of the commission and the many
growers who participated is greatly appreciated.
