General Instructions
- What is SOILS in the NEWS?
The goal of this activity is to increase the students’ awareness
of the importance of soils in their everyday lives. Not a day goes
by when issues involving SOILS are not discussed in the popular press
(newpaper articles, magazines, radio (eg NPR), TV(web sites), and
in current WEB pages).
Your Instructor will lead a discussion each Friday on one or more
of the Soils in the News aritlces you have submitted.
How do I Find Articles on Soils in the News?
Newspapers (The Oregonian, Statesman Journal, NY Times, etc.)
Magazines (Smithsonian, Scienticfic American) published within the last
calander year
Internet News Sites
Broadcast Media Sites (OPB, NPR, ABC etc.)
What do I have to turn in to receive credit for
this exercise?
Find two published articles in popular press or broadcast media.
Construct a WORD document in the following format. You will receive
full credit for turning in articles in the proper format.
1. Your name
2. Full Title of the Article
3. Citation (name of paper, magazine or etc, date, vol, pgs)
4. Paragraph summarizing the role or importance of soils in this
article
5. URL address for the article or attached scanned image in .tif
or.jpg formats
6. Send the WORD.DOC and attachments, if applicable via e-mail to:

with “CSS205SITN” in the Subject line
What will happen to the articles I turn in?
The articles you turn in will be placed on the Soils:Sustainable
Ecosystem (CSS 205) webpage. (Your name and one paragraph synopsis
will not be posted on the site.) The articles may be shared with other
soils webpages.
We will discuss two or three articles as part of lecture on Friday.
The articles will be part of your weekly readings.
When is this Assignment Due?
