CSS 315: Nutrient Cycling and Management

COURSE: CSS 315 - Nutrient Cycling and Management, 4 hours credit.
Three one-hour lectures and one laboratory per week.

DESCRIPTION: Nutrient forms, transformations and plant availability as influenced by chemical and biological reactions in soils; soil pH and management of acid and alkaline soils; characteristics and use of fertilizers and soil amendments. Labs include routine soil testing procedures, application for soil fertility management, and field trips.

TEXT: Soil Fertility and Fertilizers, 7th ed. Havlin, J.L., J.D. Beaton, Tisdale, S.L., and W.L. Nelson. 2005. Pearson Prentice Hall, Upper Saddle River, NJ. This is a traditional soil fertility text giving broad coverage of soil fertility management practices across many cropping systems.
EVALUATION: Lecture 2 mid-term exams, 100 points each 200
  Final exam 150
  Laboratory 5 lab reports, 25 points each 125
  Laboratory final 50
  Short written and oral assignments, 1 at 5 points and 5 at 2 points each 15
  Total points 540

 

No make-up exams after scheduled times.

No laboratory make-up without specific arrangement.

All sections of class must be completed to receive passing grade.
