CSS/GEO 335H: Water Resource Science Connections

Meeting Time and Place: TR 1400-1550, StAg 226

Course Overview:

1. The students, during the first week, will determine the format and the content of the course in discussions.

2. Possible formats are:

  1. One or a few major projects on a water topic, by small groups or by the entire class. Guest lectures, readings and discussions could provide background for the project(s).
  2. Reading, writing and discussion of a chosen, limited list of topics.
  3. Lectures and videos for a chosen list of topics, with projects for the remainder of the work.
  4. Other

3. Some current water issues are:

  • competition for water in arid lands—politics and technology
  • global water resources and the Earth summit
  • water allocation in the western USA
  • water allocation during drought
  • lifestyles in arid environments
  • water uses in rituals, attitudes toward water
  • hydrology concepts
  • water quality—laws and enforcement
  • clean and affordable drinking water
  • watershed management for runoff pollution
  • local watershed councils for planning and restoration
  • Salmon in the Northwest as an integrating water issue
