Course Description:
An introduction to principles and practices of seed-based genetic delivery
systems. Fundamentals of seed crop biology, cultivar maintenance, and
production methods are stressed. Concepts are illustrated using Pacific
Northwest seed crops.
Prerequisites: CSS 200 or equivalent, or permission of the
instructor
Lecture: MWF 9:00-9:50
Objectives and Student Learning Outcomes:
- Demonstrate a fundamental knowledge of the role of seed production
as a key component of the genetic delivery system.
- Explain and discuss how seed crop biology, environment, and management
practices influence seed yield and seed quality.
- Demonstrate knowledge of the structure and function of the modern
seed production industry, and define the economic factors that affect
the viability of the seed production industry.
- Describe the principles and practices required for production of high
quality seed crops.

Course reading materials will be assigned during the term from the booklet
The Art and Science of Seed Production in the Pacific Northwest, by Thomas G.
Chastain. Reading assignments are listed on the lecture outline.
Graduate Credit:
Students taking this course for graduate credit (CSS 560) will be required
to write a review of the scientific and technical literature available for your
Seed Plan’s seed crop. The review will not exceed 10 double-spaced pages
and will be prepared according to CBE style format. For more information, refer
to the Guide to Successful Seed Plans.
