CSS 599/699 Special Topics - Professional Development

Grading

CSS 599/699 – professional development - meets the CSS departmental requirement for an orientation/professional development class

One credit - Pass/no pass

Class requirements

  1. Attend and actively participate in at least seven of the ten class sessions.  Attendance will documented by your submission of a written comment at the end of each class session – 2-3 sentences/bullets that summarize something new you learned in the seminar that day, something you found surprising, an additional question you had that was unanswered, a comment or suggestion.

  2. Prepare a draft poster in Power Point or small-scale (1/2 or smaller size) format for presentation to the class on May 6.

  3. Prepare a final poster at full size for sharing with the class and other interested people on June 3.

  4. Identify what your ideal job would be and then answer this typical interview question in front of the class “How have your training and experience prepared you for this position?”  Also prepare and present an “elevator speech” (1-minute talk) to answer the question “What do you do?” from a lay person who is standing next to you in a long store line.  These presentations will be given on May 20.  Your classmates and the class coordinator will provide comments on your presentations.  If deemed helpful, you may redo one or both presentations on June 3.
Students who are not taking the course for credit but would like the experience may participate in activities 2-4.
