Computing Support: How to Scan a Picture or Slide

(NOTE: Instructions are for the scannner in ALS 3017)

Opening the program

1. The orange and green LEDs on the front panel of the scanner should be on. If they are not, check the power switch on the scanner, which is located at right corner of the back panel.

2. From the Start menu select Programs then click on Adobe Photoshop 7.0 Adobe Photoshop 7.0

3. In PhotoShop go to -> File -> Import Click on SiverFast (Microtek). You should see two new windows. The first window shows current settings. The second window shows scan preview.

Preparing for scanning

  1. Go to the General tab. See figure below.
    1. To scan single image, set Scan Mode to Normal.
    2. To scan multiple images at a time complete Preparing for scanning instructions and see Batch Scanning on another page
    3. To scan a slide or a transparent, set Original to Transparency. To scan a paper, photo or a document, set Original to Reflective.
    4. To scan a positive picture, set Pos/Neg to Positive. To scan a negative, set Pos/Neg to Negative.
  2. Go to Frame tab. Description of the parameters:
    1. Scan type. For full color scan, select 48->24 Bit Colour. Grayscale scan – 16->8 Bit Greyscale
    2. Filter. Choose either None or Sharpen (USM) for crisper image.
    3. Setting should be Save.
    4. Image Type. It is best to use Standard.
    5. To choose a resolution for the output image. DPI adjuster You can use the slider, or input a number for the DPI in the text box.
      100 dpi – good for Web. Output image will have approximately the same size when you print it on paper or view on the Web.
      200-300 dpi – good for high quality images that will be inserted into Word document, PowerPoint presentation or high quality printing.
      600 dpi – good for slides. It will produce a picture with a size of about 800x500 pixels.

General scanning

  1. Placing in scanner.
    1. Picture – put it upside down in the scanner.
    2. Slides – place them face up as you normally look at them. You can scan multiple slides at the same time using the slide holder.
    3. Transparency - place them face up as you normally look at them.
  2. Click on Prescan button.
  3. If image preview looks reverse or upside down, it can be fixed by using icon Invert .
  4. Choose a scanning area by (a) creating a new area with your mouse and/or (b) moving/resizing scanning area.
    Example: The figure on the right shows scanning preview window, slide holder and a scanning area placed over a single slide. It is possible to have multiple scanning areas at a time. You can switch between them by single-click over desired scanning area.
  5. To delete a scanning area select it and use the Delete icon.
  6. After you have selected a scan area press Adjust Brightness icon located at the main settings panel. It will automatically adjust brightness, contrast and other values for optimal scanning. Repeat this step each time you move or resize scanning area.
  7. Click Scan button.
  8. Image will be scanned and control will automatically return back to PhotoShop.
  9. Save your image in PhotoShop using appropriate file format and compression level.

Batch scanning

  1. Follow general scanning instructions, steps 1-6.
  2. Define scanning area for every picture. Repeat point 6 for every scanning area.
  3. Go to the General tab and set Scan Mode to Batch.
  4. Give a name for every scanning area. Name box
  5. Follow general scanning instructions, steps 7-8.
