GTA Support for Classes

Distribution of CSS Dollars Designated for GTAs

At present, we have set aside @$42K in our departmental budget to provide teaching support in the department.  The following is our plan for distribution of these funds.

Background

1.   Instructors are expected to deal with single lab/recitations associated with their classes.

2.   We have extreme differences in how technical assistance dollars are distributed in the department.  These dollars are generally used to support all program operations of a project leader hence such support is considered when allocating GTA dollars.

The Policy

1.   Instructors are expected to cover one lab/recitation section of their class each term the class is taught.  GTA support may be available in such instances if students are meeting the unpaid teaching requirement for their degree.

2.   Project leaders with more than 0.5 FTE FRA department-provided support are expected to cover two lab sections using project resources.  A GTA from outside their project may be available in such instances if students are meeting the unpaid teaching requirement for their degree.

3.   A GTA will be provided for lab sections in addition to those listed under 1 and 2 at the rate of 0.20 FTE.  The department will either cover this portion of a student's existing assistantship within or outside the department or pay 0.20 FTE of an assistantship (at the salary level established by the Graduate School for their experience level) for students in or out of the department who do not have an assistantship.  This FTE level provides for tuition remission.
