Computing and Web Works

Duties

  1. Hold general department meeting to seek input on computing support needs/desired changes. Known concerns include
    1. ways to address turn around time on placing orders
    2. ways to address turn around time on set up of new equipment
  2. Help to define specific role of new computer support person
  3. Discuss ways to enhance on-going communication with users – people need to know what is happening, problems that have been encountered, major projects underway, etc.
  4. Several faculty have asked about having greater independence and freedom to purchase computing hardware and software.
    1. Is this advisable? If so, why? If not, why not?
    2. If possible
      1. Is any level of connectivity to the departmental network possible/advisable? Wireless?
      2. Can/should any level of support be offered?
      3. What are the downsides of independent machines?
  5. Asses the need for departmental web page changes. Some faculty would like to see other points of entry – by crop (potatoes, wheat, barley, etc.), by discipline (soil physics, soil biology, plant breeding and genetics) – as the current topic buttons can be confusing. Assess other departmental pages and determine if changes could be made.
  6. Distance education – what capabilities do we have and what should we be working toward. Coordinate with Curriculum Committee.

Undergrad and Grad Curriculum

Duties

  1. Work with the Graduate Committee on the review of 400/500 split classes. Graduate Committee will take the lead.
  2. WIC classes – develop a final strategy on dealing with our WIC class need and implement the strategy.
  3. Review the OSU and CAS policies/strategies on student assessment and develop a CSS plan by the established deadline.
  4. Access the potential for a year-round offering of CSS 205 as a service and recruiting class and determine needed resources for such an offering
  5. Discuss other recruiting strategies and propose plans to faculty.
  6. Work with Seed Science group on option changes
  7. Pastoral Traditions – review materials and make decision on whether to proceed with offering
  8. Distance Education service classes (CSS305, 200, etc.). What should we be doing? Coordinate with the Computing/Web Works Committee.

  1. Plan, organize and execute, with needed assistance, departmental community building events for the coming year
  2. Work on ways to advertise departmental activities as part of a grander department promotional/recruiting activity
  3. Work with Animal Science counterparts on the 2007 Centennial Celebration
  4. Work with department head on alumni/friends newsletter

Duties

  1. Develop master list of all potential awards/recognitions for which CSS faculty, staff and students may be eligible
  2. Develop master list of past award winners
  3. Develop five-year plan of potential nominees. For the current year establish
    1. lead person for identified nominations
    2. timeframes for completion of nominations
    3. committee chair is charged with oversight
  4. Work with Barb Reed on a way to catalog awards, honors and recognitions received by faculty, staff and students throughout the year

Peer Teaching Evaluation (on and off campus)

Makeup - faculty member from each unit in addition to an associate head who will serve as chair, one grad and one undergrad

Duties

  1. Do one-time, in-class evaluations of all classes, all terms
  2. Review/refine/develop the procedure for doing a complete evaluation of a faculty members teaching program
  3. Develop a schedule for doing complete reviews of all teaching programs over the next three years – focus early in the process on faculty who will need this review for use in the promotion process
  4. Conduct at least one program evaluation in the current school year

P&T

Duties -

  1. Complete packet preparations for 2005-06 candidates
  2. Begin work with 2006-07 candidates – all should do seminar as part of the Monday afternoon departmental seminar series
  3. Met with all new faculty and establish mentor committees to work with these faculty – Norberg, Silberstein, Rondon, Fery, Flowers, Vales, Cassidy, Duggan, Angima, Stephenson

Safety

Duties -

  1. Develop an on-line and PDF format safety manual for use in departmental labs and other settings (farms, greenhouse) – who to contact, what to do, how, etc. The initial need is a first response type of document. An expanded version can be built over time
  2. Review current safety training offerings for students and faculty and determine what else should be done and how it can be most efficiently done. Develop a plan for faculty to consider. Be sure to include existing CAS committees looking at similar endeavors. Do we just tack on to existing efforts or do something on our own for specific purposes?

Duties

  1. Solicit and establish seminar schedule for school year
    1. Graduate students who need to present have priority
    2. People up for promotion and/or tenure have second priority
    3. We want all faculty to give a presentation once every 3-4 years – those giving P&T seminars count as part of this process
  2. Advertise and promote seminars internally
  3. Advertise and promote seminars externally

  4. Develop seminar presentation workshop for student presenters – can be advertised for participation by students from other departments – 1+ training sessions
  5. Develop seminar evaluation process for student presenters
  6. Refine procedures for polycom connections
  7. Develop a system for automated announcement of seminars to off-campus faculty with their interest in polycom participation recorded
  8. Refine procedures for recording and web-posting seminar presentations for other time and place access
  9. Make arrangements with staff to procure refreshments for seminars

Student Scholarships and Awards

Duties

  1. Update master list of all potential awards/recognitions/scholarships for which CSS students may be eligible
  2. Develop master list of past award/recognition/scholarship winners
  3. Make concerted effort to all CSS students as to the availability of scholarships and grants – some not requiring financial need
  4. Hold normal school year meetings to determine possible scholarship/award nominees
  5. Work with Barb Reed on a way to catalog awards, honors and recognitions received by students throughout the year
  6. Evaluate all CSS scholarships to see if there are some whose scope could be broadened to allow for greater flexibility in use – this may require department head contact of donors or donor rep to ask about the possibility of changing the terms of an endowment

Liaisons

OSU Valley Library

Representatives: Soils - Parke, Crops - Vales

Duties -

  • Represent their department to the Library.
  • Convey any departmental concerns about the Library to the subject librarian covering their department.
  • Distribute to their faculty colleagues information that comes from the Library, such as new services, new collections, or requests for information - journal use surveys, etc.
  • Arrange and schedule visits from the subject librarians.
  • Ensure that faculty requests for books and journals are directed to the subject librarian.
