Title: The Gummy Worm Lab

Level: 6-8 grades

 

Materials required:

·         .  gummy worms, 1 per student

·         .  ruler

 

 

Optional Materials:

 

  • .  scale
  • .  graduated cylinder

 

 

Activity time:              45 minutes

 

CIM Standards:

            Students will gather and record data generated through observation.

 

 

Background Information:

            Students need to know definitions of qualitative and quantitative observations and inferences.  Students also need to have measuring skills, especially length, and optionally mass, volume and density.

 

Experiment options/ applications :  This experiment is useful for introducing observations and inferences using an inanimate object in which the students can use all of the senses (except hearing).

 

Procedure:

1.       Have students make a formatted piece of paper with sections: title, purpose, materials, and data.  The data section should have three headings: qualitative observations, quantitative observations, and inference.
