The Crop & Soil Science Potato Research and Extension Fund

Oregon is the 4th largest potato producing state in the nation with distinct production areas in five growing regions. Oregon State University is the primary source of potato production information for Oregon growers. As Oregon State University resources are constrained, leading-edge experiment station research and extension outreach needs additional funding support. Potato quality is critical for the success of the Oregon potato industry in maintaining and expanding local, regional and foreign markets. Industry sustainability will be dependent on grower ability to address both domestic and foreign market issues while maintaining environmental quality. Increased resources for potato research would contribute greatly in meeting product quality challenges and information needs for Oregon’s 6th largest agricultural commodity. The CSS Potato Research and Extension Fund is being created to provide financial support for research and extension programs that will strive to ensure that Oregon’s potato industry is sustainable and offers high quality products that are sought by buyers across the nation and around the world.

Funding: This Fund is being established with a small initial contribution from the Oregon Potato Commission with the intent of building the fund to an endowed level ($10,000) through outside contributions over the coming year. Our medium term goal is to reach an endowment level of at least $100,000 over the next three years. At this level, over $4500 would be available on an annual a basis to provide seed money innovative research and extension activities. Our long term goal is an endowment of $5 million dollars which would allow hiring of graduate students, post doctoral students, short-term visiting scientists, specialized equipment and other needed resources for a world-class potato development program.

Contributions: Contributions in any amount can be made via the internet or by writing a check to the “Crop and Soil Potato Research and Extension Fund” and mailing it to the OSU Foundation, 850 SW 35th Street, Corvallis, OR 97333. General contributions will be used to build the fund balance to the endowed level. If you would like some funds immediately available for a specific research or extension project, please designate in a note accompanying your check the portion of your contribution for immediate use and the activity you would like to support with these funds. Those considering larger donations can contact Todd Bastian, College of Agricultural Sciences Development Officer, at 541-737-8724 or via email (Todd.Bastian@oregonstate.edu) for information on giving options.
