Education:

Oregon State University - Ph.D. Crop and Soil Science, Entomology emphasis*, 2006
Oregon State University - M.S. Entomology & Integrated Sciences, 1990
Colorado State University - B.S. Entomology & Zoology, 1980
* Dissertation Title: Phenology and Monitoring of the Cabbage Maggot, Delia radicum (L.) in Brassica Root Crops

Professional Goals and Career Emphasis:

Design, implementation and management of integrated pest management (IPM) programs emphasizing a systems approach and biologically-based control strategies.  I specialize in arthropod life biology, behavior, and ecology (i.e. landscape design), monitoring, biological control, transfer of technology, and measuring impact while identifying limitations of grower adoption of IPM practices. Education and outreach activities play an important role in my programs. Current teaching responsibilities involve guest lecturing, hands-on workshops, field demonstrations, and international extension activities.

Current Work Focus:

Investigate, develop, and evaluate biologically-based pest management strategies on a statewide level for soil and foliar arthropod insects, mites, and mollusks in commercial agriculture including grapes, hops, vegetables, berry and stone fruits, grasses grown for seed and cereal pastures, nuts, canola and camelina, and home urban. Extend information via hands-on workshops and trainings, professional and grower presentations in all aspects of applied entomology and insect pest management programs for extension agents, growers, agricultural consultants, field reps, community, and for re-certification of pesticide consultants/applicators.
