Triticale

Triticale

Triticales are a man-made crop. They result from a cross between durum wheats and rye. Older triticale varieties have large kernels with a wrinkled surface and the blue-grey color typical of rye. Newer triticales look just like soft red wheats. Kernels are floury in appearance when cut open and produce floury particles when crushed. Triticales vary in protein content. Triticales are generally considered to be a feed grain though small amounts are used in breads and efforts are underway to breed varieties with improved milling and baking properties. Triticales tend to have better disease resistance than wheats.
