Ph.D. 1997 University of Hohenheim, Stuttgart, Germany
M.S. 1992 University of Hohenheim, Stuttgart, Germany

Current Work Focus: The processes at the interface between organic matter and mineral surfaces, including mineral surface properties, organic matter properties, bonding mechanisms, adsorption processes, mineral-microbial interactions and organic matter turnover dynamics.

Graduate Students:

Teaching:

  •  CSS 375 Soil Resource Potentials (Fall Term)

Introduces  soils as habitats and as providers of ecological services. Includes practical field work. Shows that sustainable management of the soil resource requires a profound understanding of the role that soils play in the functioning of natural ecosystems as well as forested or agricultural systems. Course explains how field observations of soil properties can be translated into quantitative estimates of the supplies a given soil can make available to a vegetation cover. Students are  guided through a land suitability evaluation by comparing vegetation and general land use requirements with soil potentials
  •  CSS 525X  Mineral-organic interactions (Spring Term)

Treats soil as the interface between organic and mineral components. Introduces molecular scale properties of major system components (mineral types and forms of soil organic matter). Shows how interactions between minerals and organics determine the special nature of the soil "bioreactor". Course is focused on biogeochemical processes that determine soil organic matter turnover.

Projects:

  • Collaboration with Delphine Derrien and Bernd Zeller, INRA Nancy, France: Dynamics of nitrogen containing organic compounds in organo-mineral associations from 15N labelling experiments (Christophe Moni, Postdoc)
  • Collaboration with Jillian Gregg, EPA Corvallis: Dynamics of Dissolved Carbon and Nitrogen in an asymmetric soil warming experiment (Christophe Moni, Postdoc)
  • Interactions of aromatic compounds with mineral and organic constituents of terrestrial systems (Marco Keiluweit, Graduate Student)
  • Collaboration with Maria Dragila and Don Horneck, CSS: The role of surface hydrophobicity for water infiltration in irrigated circles near Hermiston (Priscilla Woolverton, Undergraduate Student)
