I am a doctoral student in the Crop Science Department. My project is examining the potential impact introduction of large scale canola acreage could have on related vegetable crops grown for seed in the Willamette Valley. Currently, growers in the valley are limited in the availability of rotational crops. This coupled with increased interest in biofuels has spawned a joint project between Oregon State University and the Oregon Department of Agriculture to examine this issue. My part of the project focuses on gene flow potential between Brassica species, examining canola’s volunteer and persistence in a grass seed rotational system, as well as surveying and cataloguing current Brassica weedy species.
I grew up in southeastern Pennsylvania, and did my undergraduate in agronomy there at Delaware Valley College of Science and Agriculture. While I was in school, and after I finished, I was the assistant superintendent at a local country club. But I always wanted to live out west, so when the opportunity arose I moved to Idaho and completed my masters in Plant Science at the University of Idaho. After I finished my masters I worked for the university as a support scientist in agronomic weed control. Through that experience I found that I enjoyed doing research and wanted to purse that desire further. So, that’s how I found my way to Oregon State.
