Farm Mangement Assistant

This position requires full scale involvement in the operation of a diversified 2500 acre grass seed, cereal, specialty seed, and mint oil production farm located in the southern Willamette Valley area.

We are looking for an individual that is interested in learning many facets of production agriculture, and working toward a greater management role.

Duties and responsibilities will include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Ability to operate all equipment and understand proper care and maintenance protocols.  Use of GPS guidance systems, and mapping on spray, fertilizer, and harvest equipment.
  • Set-up, scheduling, operation, and monitoring of center pivot, linear, large hose traveling gun equipment.
  • Supervision of small irrigation crew.
  • Supervision, monitoring, and quality control of seed cleaning plant.
  • Monitoring of crop health, disease, weed, insect pressure.  As well as water needs and nutrition.
  • Miscellaneous other duties to ensure connectivity with all phases of crop production cycles.

This job is available immediately, on a full time basis, (or part time through this winter season).  But the position needs to be a full-time commitment by Spring 2010.  Wage is to be determined, based on ability to learn, problem solving skills, and a positive, willing attitude.  Benefits include insurance, vacation pay, and SEP retirement deposits when distributed.

General Description: 
This position is a hybrid of packing/production management and grower relations.  The candidate must expand the company’s existing grower base through good networking and communication, and additionally manage the company’s packing operations in Sherwood, OR.  Grower relations responsibilities will require this individual to liaise with grower base and with Market 52 sales force to achieve mutual benefit for both the company and our growers, and to grow market share for the company by contracting more tonnage and acreage.  Packing/Production responsibilities will be to run all packing systems including a year-round berry packing operation and to manage 16-32 employees with 3-4 direct reports.  We are looking for someone with the maturity, emotional intelligence, experience, and resolve to succeed in this critical position for Market 52.

CSIRO Plant Industry Postdoc N/A
An opportunity exists within CSIRO Plant Industry's Molecular and Physiological Wheat Breeding Group for an early career scientist to undertake novel and cutting edge research. This research forms part of a project aimed at the identification of wheat germplasm with enhanced N uptake, grain yield and grain protein content. Field trials varying genotype and N will be sown in Eastern and Western Australia. The focus of the research will be on the identification of wheat germplasm with enhanced N uptake capacity, grain yield and grain protein content, and will explore the mechanism of increased N capture.

The key capabilities we are seeking in the successful candidate include:

- The ability to work in the field of crop physiology and agronomy,
specifically at the soil-root interface;
- A good knowledge of microbiological transformations of N in soil and N
uptake by plants;
- Keen interest in taking research outcomes through to application;
- The capacity to present research findings both orally and in writing to a
variety of audiences.

You should be comfortable doing scientific research both in the field as well as in laboratory environments. A strong commitment to team work will be highly regarded.

The Molecular and Physiological Wheat Breeding Group is a research unit of CSIRO Plant Industry. The Group is made up of a large team of research scientists and technicians located in Canberra, Brisbane and Perth. Our aim is to identify or develop germplasm carrying specific traits and trait combinations for improved performance in a range of Australian wheat-growing environments. We aim to make germplasm available in a form readily useable by commercial breeding programs as parents or in direct evaluation for commercial release.

The successful appointee must have completed the requirements for a PhD. Owing to terms of the fellowship, candidates must not have more than 3 years relevant Post-Doctoral Experience.
