Lex Robertson | Crop and Soil Science Undergraduate | Soil Science Option | 2024 CSS Outstanding Senior Award Receipient
About Lex:
I came to Corvallis four years ago interested in studying agriculture-related sustainability at OSU. I started in engineering and quickly realized I was more interested in hands-on scientific work, which brought me to the Crop and Soil Science department. I found the crop and soil science community to be extremely welcoming as I was surrounded by very passionate and knowledgeable instructors and peers with a broad range of life experiences. I quickly found myself connecting with the few soil science option students that I met, along with other related majors, and knew that I had made the right decision in my studies. I started working two student positions within CSS during the beginning of my first year in the department. First, I hopped on board as a hop harvest crew member for aroma hops research and plant breeding. Then I was hired on at OSU's Soil Health Lab a bit later. I continued on at the hops farm under Shaun Townsend's mentorship for my undergraduate research project. I have been with these organizations ever since.
Plans for the future:
Right now I am working in geographic information systems, remote sensing, and taking a break. I want to eventually further my studies in soil science and use my remote sensing skills to further soil research and development within GIS.
What was the biggest challenge that you faced during your academic pursuits and what achievement are you most proud of?
Financial struggles were a significant issue for me. I got through my undergraduate degree working three jobs simultaneously for most of my terms. Last spring I worked 55 hours per week among my three jobs, two being within OSU's CSS department, and one outside organization, while taking four classes worth 16 credits total. I am proud of myself for not only working so hard with difficulty supporting myself financially, but keeping my attitude and spirits high, and maintaining a positive and excited outlook about my learning. I think my passion for my studies and growth through my jobs with a holistic learning experience is what got me through confidently and consistently.
