Cody Holubeck | Crop and Soil Science Undergraduate | Soil Science Option

About Cody:

I currently live on the picturesque shores of Lake Superior in Duluth, MN. However, my journey to Oregon State University is anything but conventional. Originally from Bakersfield, California, I've traversed both the West and East Coasts, soaking in the diversity of landscapes and cultures along the way. At 33 working on my first bachelor’s degree, I stand as a non-traditional student, a label that embodies the richness of my experiences and the breadth of my aspirations. My academic journey commenced in 2015, marked by a series of explorations aimed at uncovering my true calling. Throughout this odyssey, one truth remained constant, my profound love for food and its innate ability to bring people together. Driven by this passion, I initially pursued a culinary career, eager to explore the culinary arts as a medium for connection and expression. Yet, as fate would have it, my path took a transformative turn, leading me into the heart of agriculture. From the fertile lands of Oregon to the rolling fields of New England, I immersed myself in the world of farming, recognizing the pivotal role of soil in nurturing the very essence of food. It was amidst this journey of self-discovery that I stumbled upon the Crop and Soil Science program at OSU, and in that moment, clarity dawned upon me. Here, amidst the academic offerings of Oregon State, I found not just a curriculum but a calling—a calling to delve deeper into the intricate web of soil and crops, to understand their symbiotic relationship, and to contribute meaningfully to the sustainable future of agriculture. For me, the love affair with food begins in the soil, and it's this profound connection that propels me forward, driving my commitment to excellence and my unwavering determination to make a difference in the world of agriculture.

Plans for the future:

In the pursuit of a career in soil science with the NRCS, my academic and career goals are intertwined with a passion for sustainable agriculture. My objective is to enroll in a master's program focused on soil science or agroecology. This academic endeavor will equip me with advanced knowledge and research skills essential for addressing the complex challenges facing modern agriculture. Beyond academia, my aspirations converge on fostering a sustainable agricultural system. I envision a future where agriculture thrives without reliance on fossil fuels, prioritizing the needs of farmers and the environment. As a soil scientist, I aim to contribute to this vision by conducting research, implementing practical solutions, and advocating for policies that promote sustainability. Within the NRCS, I aspire to be a driving force behind initiatives aimed at enhancing soil health, conserving natural resources, and mitigating environmental degradation. By collaborating with farmers, communities, and policymakers, I intend to facilitate the transition towards more sustainable agricultural practices. In essence, my future aspirations revolve around becoming a catalyst for positive change in agriculture, working towards a future where sustainability is not just a goal but a reality. Through academic pursuits, professional endeavors, and advocacy efforts, I am committed to contributing to the development of a more sustainable and equitable food system.
