Hello, I’m Betsy Verhoeven and will be joining the instructor ranks in the Crop and Soil Science Department Spring 2022 quarter. While, new to campus and teaching, I am not new to OSU or the department. For the past three and half years I have served as a field crops agronomist for OSU Extension, covering the mid-Willamette Valley. Going further back, I worked for stints in the Barley and Wheat Breeding programs and roamed the halls of the Crops building as a kid, as my mom, Mary Verhoeven, worked in the Wheat Breeding program – the cement stairwells smell exactly the same – and I actually like the smell! I’m excited to be taking on a new role at OSU and am really looking forward to teaching in the department. This spring I will be teaching Precision Agriculture and going forward will teach a mix of soils and crops classes as needed, both on campus and Ecampus courses. I have a background in soil science and nitrogen cycling with a M.Sc. in Soils and Biogeochemistry from UC Davis and a Ph.D. from the Swiss Federal Technical Institute (ETH-Zurich). My research and work have always been on the applied side and agriculture focused and I look forward to bringing my research and professional background into my teaching. Diverse, bright and engaged students in agriculture are more important than ever and I hope to be a small part of educating this next generation.
