The Oregon State University Weed Science Group conducts basic and applied research and maintains active Extension programs in partnership with Oregon growers, the agricultural industry, and public agencies. We are a discipline that is spread across departments at Oregon State University and agricultural experiment stations around Oregon.
Some estimates indicate that weeds in agronomic and horticultural crops in Oregon cost growers at least $100 million per year in control strategies, independent of their adverse effects on crop yield and quality. This is a tremendous cost to crop producers who rely on Oregon State University’s applied research land-grant mission to develop solutions for these weed management issues.
Faculty and staff work on a wide array of weed management challenges throughout the diverse environments and cropping systems of Oregon to provide science-based information on practical and applied methods for weed management. In addition, as funding and time have allowed, many of us conduct applied research and develop educational programs to improve management of non-agricultural invasive weed species that threaten the restoration and preservation of native plant communities.
