Student Spotlight - Amy Walls

Amy Walls | Crop and Soil Science Undergraduate | Soil Science Option | 2024 CSS Outstanding Senior Award Receipient

About Amy: I live in Maryland, which is where I grew up. After graduating high school, I went to the local community college and received an Associate's Degree in general studies. Not knowing what I wanted to do, I decided to move to California where I worked as a waitress. From California, I moved to Hawaii, then to South Carolina, then to Colorado, and finally back to Maryland to be close to family. Through all of my moves, I worked as a waitress as I wasn't really sure what else to do, and it was easy to find employment and make money right away. I continued working as a waitress in Maryland and developed an interest in environmental science. From researching environmental science programs, I came across soil science programs which piqued my interest. I found OSU Ecampus, and was interested in the many degree options offered to online students. I was also drawn to OSU because I needed to take out student loans to pay for school myself, and OSU Ecampus does not charge out-of-state tuition to Ecampus students. I began OSU as an environmental science major, mainly due to intimidation of the soil science courses, but with some encouragement from some great teachers at OSU, I switched my degree to soil science.

Plans for the future:

I am hoping to work for the NRCS as a Soil Conservationist. Ultimately, I would like to work with farms practicing conventional farming methods to transition to regenerative farming practices.
